Social connections – friends, family, people at church or in volunteer groups, online discussion forums, group exercise classes, etc. – increase our motivation to follow through with our goals. What seems difficult and perhaps impossible to accomplish on our own becomes a realistic goal when we share our plans with a group.
Women join my running groups because they know they’ll always have someone to run with them. They have so much fun talking and laughing the running itself seems easier. There are no more excuses for bad weather, because the group will be ready to go no matter what Mother Nature throws at us.
People join support groups or exercise groups so that someone holds them accountable. When we develop friendships within these groups, we’re more likely to continue to attend the group.
Join a group to reach your goals
We know that one way to increase motivation to make changes in our life – begin an exercise program, stop smoking, get more sleep, eat more vegetables – is to set goals within a group. The group might be our family deciding to include an extra vegetable with dinner, or our colleagues at work going for a 10 minute walk before lunch. Or we might check in daily with our Facebook friends or even form a social media group dedicated to a specific goal such as weight loss.
You can join a group in your community focused on the changes you want to make: an exercise group, a stop smoking group, a weight loss group. You can participate in an online community to share ideas and motivation with people in your situation; there are groups for people with diabetes or wanting to lose weight. You can even start a group in your area: a morning walking group, a mom’s group, a hiking group.
Join a group of women to increase energy and make yourself a priority
Flourish After 40 uses the telephone to bring together women in a group focused on increasing our energy and identifying and meeting our individual goals. But you know what? The goals aren’t individual when they’re shared with a group of friends. You’re not making changes by yourself when you share your weekly goals with the coaching group and stay in touch on our Facebook page. When you feel like you’re never going to be able to reach your goals and are ready to give up, the women in the group are there to lift you up and encourage you to keep going.
Increase your motivation and have fun with other people working toward the same goals by joining a group. What have you got to lose?
